Rumi on Fasting

4 10 2007

Celebrate! The month of fasting has come
Moulana Jalaluddin Rumi

Celebrate! The month of fasting has come.
Pleasant journey to the one
Who is the company of the fasting.

I climbed the roof to see the Moon,
Because I really missed fasting
By heart and soul.

I lost my hat while looking at the Moon.
the Sultan of fasting made me drunk.

O Muslims, I have been drunk
since that day I lost my mind.
What a beautiful fortune fasting has.
What a wonderful glory.

There is another secret moon
Besides this one.
He is hiding in the tent of fasting
Like a Turk.

Anyone who comes
To the harvest of fasting in this month
Finds the way to this Moon.

Whoever makes his face
Resemble pale satin
Wears the silk clothes of fasting.

Prayers will be accepted in this month.
Sighs of the one fasting pierce the sky.

The person who sits patiently
At the bottom of fasting’s well
Owns the love of Egypt, like Joseph.

O the word which eats the Sahur meal,
Be silent so that anyone
Who knows fasting will enjoy fasting.

Come, O Shems, the brave one
Of whom Tebriz is proud.
You are the commander of fasting’s soldiers.

Ghazal No. 2344 from the Divan-e Shams-e Tabrizi

I have always loved rumi , I collect as much poetry of his as I can , I remember lending one of my poetry books to my friend she fell in love with his poetry that now she always asks me pleas buy his poetry as gifts for me . Having said that I have been told I should not be reading his poetry because their is shrik in it bla bla, but how can one say that it is poetry you can never translate someones poetry completely .

do you follow the darvish order?do you consider yourself to be a sufi ?

amal, yes I have always loved Rumi. His poetry is indeed amazing. He is one of those rare individuals who have the power to put the ineffable in words. Regarding the people who say that do not read his poetry because it is shirk, they are almost always the ones who have never read his poetry or have read his work out of context and declare takfir just because they see the word sufi attached with Rumi. I actually do follow the order or consider myself a sufi but I love Rumi nonetheless.

Ahhhh…….nice poetry by rumi. His got a way with words has’nt he? He writes likes he’s drunk (astughfirullah). He gets you all excited and the words leap out at you. Have always loved rumi 🙂

azza05, yes he does and speaking of Rumi being drunk please pass the drink saqi. Just kidding lol.

walaya, Great idea. Unless one has decided not to listen to Rumi it is hard not to like him. That said, there are actually people out there who do say all those negative things about Rumi that amal mentioned. 😦
