Truth and Numerical Majority

6 10 2007

One person from whom I have always learned important and profound things about faith is Søren Kierkegaard. In the following excerpt he makes the observation that numerical strength does not confer the status of Truth to a statement.

“Truth always rests with the minority, and the minority is always stronger than the majority, because the minority is generally formed by those who really have an opinion, while the strength of a majority is illusory, formed by the gangs who have no opinion — and who, therefore, in the next instant (when it is evident that the minority is the stronger) assume its opinion… while truth again reverts to a new minority.”

Doesnt work with any sort of fanaticism or fascism because they are contagious at a mass level and destroy opposition as a part of the destruction of minorities whether actual or conceived.

I always contemplate this , why is majority of people asleep? and the minority of people are the one who make a change in society . I really find that facinating as to why the majority of people do not think for themselves and just go werever the water flows, like didn’t allah give you a barin to decide things for yourselves?

jalal, A very good observation and that is why all sorts of tyranny and fascism should be opposed whether religious or non-religious before it goes too much power.

amal, I have also thought about this for some time now and have come to the conclusion that may be this is a ‘fact’ of life and thus what is important is that the people who are ‘awake’ should not sit idle but rather do their job.

I have also come to that fact , that some people are just snoozing away , totaly clue less to what is going on , and their are some people ‘like me’ who is looking around and thinking ‘what the hell is wrong with you !??’ , Sometimes you begin to question , wether you yourself is normal or not ? perhaps you should be like the majority so then it will make your life easiyier .
Like you the said the ones that are ‘awake’ should do their job rather then despairing 🙂
